Tell the Chief Ombudsman we want our democracy back
Our democracy is under attack and we must ACT NOW!
Papua New Guinea's democracy is under attack so please send a message to the Chief Ombudsman calling on him to investigate the Prime Minister, Leader of the House and the Speaker of Parliament.
Parliament has sat for just 30 days in the last year and has now been adjourned, in the most controversial circumstances, until November.1
Faced with mounting opposition over controversial amendments to the Environment Act, failure to take action over chronic corruption and its waste of public money, the government has shut down Parliament and run off to hide.
This is just the latest attack on our democracy from an increasingly autocratic government.2
Our top lawyers 3 say the adjournment of Parliament is undemocratic, unlawful and in breach of the Constitutional (as it is mandatory for Parliament to sit for a minimum of 63 days in any year).
But who is going to TAKE ACTION?
We need to make our voice's heard otherwise NOTHING will be done.
The Prime Minister, Leader of the House and Speaker could be jailed for up to 10 years for their illegal action - but the Ombudsman Commission says it lacks the resources to investigate all 109 MPs.4
But the Ombudsman doesn't need to investigate 109 MPs. It was the Prime Minister, the Speaker and the Leader of Government Business who orchestrated the adjournment - against the wishes of the majority of MPs who were present. It is these three who should be investigated.
If there is no accountability for Parliament not sitting then Papua New Guinea's democracy is dead.
Please send your message to the Chief Ombudsman now and urge him to ACT NOW! by investigating those responsible.
