The RD tuna cannery in Madang is a Filipino owned operation that has provoked considerable controversy over working conditions, hygiene standards, environmental pollution and negative social impacts on local communities.

The local Kananam people have their own website which highlights their perspective on the tuna cannery and the problems it creates - Kananam say no to RD tuna

RD Tuna is another website that highlights the negative impacts of the RD tuna operation and the local campaign against the proposed Pacific Marine Industrial Zone which will see a further ten tuna factories build alongside the RD cannery

RD Tuna PNG, the Filipino comapny that operates the RD tuna cannery has its own website that gives a rather different perspective on the cannery plant and fishing operations.

In 2003 a major independent Social Impact study raised serious concerns about the ability of RD Tuna to conduct its operations in a humane, legal or safe manner. The report highlighted the failure of RD to match community expectations or live up to its promises and identified a whole series of serious human rights abuses. The report can be downloaded below.
