Momis’ arrogance offends many Bougainvilleans

The leadership of President John Momis is continually being scrutinized heavily by people from both within and outside Bougainville. In his most recent doing or undoing (as seen by critiques) through the passing of the controversial Transitional Mining Bill, the President is seen to have pulled the last straw of confidence that many have in the father of Papua New Guinea’s constitution.

While so much word has been thrown around in the social and mainstream media, little has been put to light about the people’s feelings towards their leader’s actions. To some, his decision to pass the bill was seen as a way forward. However, to many others, this was seen as a sign of betrayal, as the passing of the bill which unfortunately for most people; have no idea about its contents or its intention, is a sign of utter disrespect towards people’s wishes.

Though President Momis proudly declared that the piece of legislation was the fruit of tireless and extensive consultation, he must have not been able to find out that many people were not aware of it, and did not see it coming. In other words, no one knew about the bill until it was about to be passed.

And this has in fact offended many Bougainvilleans, who think the President is being arrogant. Let alone the criticisms on social and mainstream media depict the kind of vile sentiment towards the President. On the ground, most respondents felt the president betrayed their trust. Many stated to have lost confidence in the President, many also questioned his representation.

Well, if the mine reopening is not in the interest of the people, then whose’ interest is it? One thing that has come out clearly is that many people are not happy, and if this is the case on the ground and on media, then maybe President Momis should pay close attention to these indicators instead of being arrogant.
