Nautilus Minerals looks to increasing the number of young Papua New Guinean workers trained to operate remotely operated machines for deep see mining for the Solwara 1 Project.

This is the massage from the company’s Country Manager Mr. Mel Togolo at a conference in Port Moresby today.

He adds their aim is to build capacity for this relatively new type of mining project in the country and the world, so that nationals can run the project. So far about four Papua New Guineans have been trained at the Duke University in the United States in deep sea mining.

“Nautilus Minerals is committed to employing and training local Papua New Guineans where ever possible, and bring world leading experts to PNG to train and nurture the next generation of scientists and leaders in PNG, says Togolo.

“It is Nautilus’ vision to train Papua New Guineans to be the first in the world to operate the seafloor production tools which is truly an exciting and rewarding opportunity for PNG nationals.”

Currently about 15% of locals are working on the project, but they are looking at lifting this number with further trainings of more workers in the near future
