Malaysian Logging and Colonialism in Sandaun and PNG

This is a video on logging in Papua New Guinea and its impacts in Sandaun Province, produced by the Bruno Manser Fund. In this video Samuel J Kime talks about illegal logging and oil palm and the threat they pose to the lives and livelihoods of people in the Sepik region. Samuel is a strong advocate for indigenous rights and rights of the people to continue to enjoy their natural environment.

In the video he talks about how Malaysian logging companies have plundered the forests of PNG for decades with nothing to show in terms of promised development. Resource owners are being conned into believing logging and oil palm will bring tangible development, but what's left to them are depleted resources, social and environmental misery and scars for future generations to see.

Among the issues highlighted in the video are:

1. Lack of free, prior and informed consent (FPIC)

2. Bribery and corruption by logging companies

3. Customary land taken away for long periods of time for oil palm plantations

4. Destruction to flora and fauna

5. A lack of development in the logging areas
